DIY Garden Succulent Planter

DIY Garden Succulent Planter

Heres a great way to spice up your backyard or Patio! If you have an empty wall or would like to create a box type of filler for an empty space try this!

We decided to make some living wall art with succulents for our outdoor patio area. I have compiled a step by step instruction as to how we made our own succulent wall planter to place in the garden.

Materials

Materials: 2x2 Wood, scrap wire mesh, Wooden thin plywood, caulk, cactus mix soil, moss and succulent cutlings.

Tools: Table or Hand Saw, finish nail gun, Wood Glue, Wire Snips, Nails, Weed Barrier, Hook to hang.

Step: 1

To start I cut the frame box and made each side the size your prefer.

Step: 2

Finish the box and place it together and make a "Top" and Bottom".  Before nailing box together place wood glue all around the edges that will be put together. The top and bottom pieces were the areas where of the box are together so you wouldn't see the finish nails once the box was hung on the wall.

(When you put the planter box together, keep in mind the sides that will show and place the best sides of the wood facing the exterior of the box.)

Step: 3

Cut the back piece and finish nailed it on the inside of the box.

Step: 4

Place Wire Mesh from the inside of the box words the front of the box staple the mesh to the inside of the inner box edges all around. Slightly with your hand push against and see empty spaces that still need to be stapled down.

Step: 5

I put the cactus soil in the box and compacted it down. I put a very think layer of moss on top of the black Weed Barrier and then place over the cactus mix in order to hold the soil in and retain a bit more moisture. The moss is more of an experimental idea, but it seems like a good one...

Step: 6

Place backing wood and nail and close and nail in hook to hang. Do not forget to glue wood together to frame. Poke holes and start planting your succulent. The ends of the succulents should "scab up" after a couple of days and then they are ready to insert into the soil and wooden box. The succulents will branch out new roots once planted in the box and essentially make a new plant.

It will take up to 6-8 weeks to fill in water once a day and place under sun for at least 4-6 hours.
